Rob Wilkey is the Studio Director for the Aviation and Mobility business segment of Formation Design Group, Inc. Rob began working at Formation Design as a staff Industrial Designer in 2013, and was promoted to Studio Director in 2019 after leading many highly successful and profitable projects for the studio. His work with Formation clients has ranged from detailing of point solutions to overseeing long-term, clean-sheet, comprehensive design programs. Rob’s project experience has centered around aviation and mobility, but has also extended to numerous medical devices, industrial & infrastructure equipment, and consumer goods. While he specializes in advanced CAD modeling, mechanism design, ergonomics, and design strategy, Rob’s toolkit also includes concept sketching, UI/UX design, and CMF rendering.

Through working with a wide variety of clients, Rob has gained understanding of the constraints unique to different fields such as aerospace and medical equipment, and extensive knowledge of a multitude of manufacturing processes and their corresponding design guidelines. His design career began at Case-Mate phone products in 2011, where he developed multiple design platforms that are still being sold.

Rob is the primary inventor of the Mobile Aircraft Boarding Lounge concept and is a listed inventor on over a dozen other utility and design patents. His project experience includes the development of numerous aircraft seating platforms for Collins Aerospace, cabin monuments and interior systems for Airbus, ADAS calibration equipment for Hunter Engineering, and mammography devices for Hologic, among many other examples.

Rob has a BS in Industrial Design from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and spends his free time rock climbing, maintaining vintage sports cars, and quietly working to reshape energy policy in Georgia.
